Herbs (again)
« on: June 12, 2012, 01:30:48 PM »

My mom likes to experiment with many herbs in her Vegetarian cooking. From basil to thyme to cilantro to saffron, we have every herb I've ever heard of and more. They're dried and shredded into those shaker containers found at fairways and food stores. Are these dried flakes of herbs safe? ( assuming its a chin- safe herb, of course). Also, is parsley ok? What about cilantro?

I never received an answer to the above question; this is just a reminder.

I really don't know how to answer this other than to say use treats that most people use and are proven safe and minimize how much you feed that is not their normal diet of hay and pellets to prevent digestive upset.

There was an interesting post recently about a chinchilla that learned to respond to praise and affection for training so the owner didn't have to entice it with food. (http://www.chinchillaclub.com/forum/index.php/topic,3787.msg29059/topicseen.html#new) To me this is an ideal goal. Since these are kind of unusual things to try I doubt you'll find many very many people who can answer.

I'm a programmer not a chinchilla breeder. I learn by asking questions just like you.

Yes its okay to give basil. If its fresh give it very sparingly (like a small pinch once a month) but if its dried you could give him a little bit more than that but I would still do it only once a week, maybe every other week. Watch their poop, they could get the runs (if this happens just dial down how much you give them or space it out more). I would make sure theres not too many chemicals/preservatives though first.
Chins can also have dandelions, parsley, oregano, mint, thyme, and cilantro. Again its probably better to give it to them dry and watch their poop at first. I would use just a very small amount once a week for each to find which my chins like :)
Hope this helps and sorry it took so long for an answer! I totally thought I responded to something very similar to this, or maybe I'm just loosing my mind!   :D
