guinea pig help!
« on: March 25, 2013, 11:22:13 AM »

Passover is tonight, and a family I know is going away and asked if I could feed and play with their 4- month- old guinea pig for the 8 days that they're gone. I agreed. The thing is, because it is Passover and owning certain foods- even pet foods- is forbidden, they told me not to feed the guinea pig his regular food (it contains certain ingredients that are not allowed to be owned over Passover). Instead, I will be providing him with fresh fruits and vegetables. I know other guinea pig owners who have done this for Passover and the animals were fine. However, just in case, does anyone know of a wet- tail (is that what it's called?) remedy for guinea pigs? I can't use the burnt toast thing- bread is not allowed on Passover.
And any other tips and hints would be helpful! Thanks! :D

If the guinea pig's stools get loose from the new diet feed it less wet stuff and let it eat more loose hay.
Start by eliminating fruit for a couple of days.
Just like in a chinchilla if the stools become liquid it will need to see an emergency vet for intervenous hydration and anti-diarrheal meds.
Also be very careful about the amounts of vegetables that it is not getting more than it is used to.

They told me to give him about a handful twice a day. I will be checking his stools often, but I can't eliminate the vegetables...

I give my guinea pigs a handful of veggies once a day and they are fine.  I would stick with a good leafy green like collard which is a great source of vitamin C which they require.  I would feed very little fruit if it isn't already in their diet.

He barely gets fruit. Maybe a teaspoon of apple twice a day. Are they prone to diabetes?
