Can anyone please suggest an effective method to prevent my white mosaic chinchilla from chewing his cage? He lives quite contentedly with his standard cage mate and has enough chew toys to sink the Titanic;hanging toys, sticks etc. he's got a very layed back nature and is in excellent health. He enjoys being handled, so I don't believe stress is an issue. He's particularly bad in the early evening, and seems to prefer chewing his cage to chewing his sticks and toys

If anyone can do that I'll give them extra appreciation points. I'll try it out on my standard grey who's a real nightmare after dark.

Its an attention getting behavior. All you can do is ignore it and eventually he will stop. Chins are stubborn so it may take some time for that to happen

I wish that was what it was but it happens when I'm in bed, the lights are off, and I don't go over there unless I think there's real trouble, which, obviously there's not. I think mine likes the sound of the bars ringing and thinks it's more entertaining than the toys and perches I have for him.

At times my chins will bite the bars at each other as i have two cages side by sjde. I've put seagrass mats up so they couldn't get to the bars and those were destroyed in no time at all haha.  It's unstoppable!

Lol that are little nightmares for that! One of mine got into a horrible habit of biting his cage so loudly that it would wake us up in the night even though they were in a different room!
It stopped eventually but it was more down to my chin changing his habits than anything we did. We tried to give him lots of toys so he wasn't bored but it didn't work until he got bored.
My advice get some ear plugs!
