Chins not getting along
« on: July 17, 2016, 12:37:31 PM »

So my baby chinchilla that i got in May is still not getting along with my older chin. The last time i let the both of them socialize with dust baths in June was a disaster. My older chinchilla did nothing but chase the baby around. The baby was making sounds and running as fast as she could. I had a towel in there and tried to grab my older one. I ended up getting bit pretty hard. This really shocked me. I let them meet nose to nose. My sister holding my older one i had the baby. My grey one went nose to nose perfectly fine until she bit my sister. This is rare behavior from my grey one she never bites. This concerns me thinking that they may never be friends. I really dont have the time to take both of them out individually and having to worry about eventually buying the baby one a separate cage instead of separating the big cage. I don't know what to do anymore

It sounds like they are not compatible with each other. They need to be housed and handled separately whether it is properly dividing the big cage or getting another separate cage. They don't need to be out more than 10-15 minutes at a time and it's usually not recommended to have them out longer than that since they can overheat from activity pretty easily. They do not need to be out every day either but it's good to at least socialize with them every day.

At this point that is my conclusion. Wait a year and see if there is any change but plan on keeping them separate.

So i let them see each other through the cage. No barking or anything. Their initial reaction is a bit crazy but then they go nose to nose

It would be best to wait till the kit is a bit older. Kits can easily stop eating if the adult bullies it too much.
