OOH! I love these topics as I am borderline paranoid that there will be an earthquake/fire some disaster so we've included our chinchilla's own section in our disaster plan and supply kit (I know we're obnoxious pet parents).
In case of a fire we can just move her whole cage out the front door. We also talked to our neighbor about what to do in case there is fire and we're not home and I made a sticker that says, "Save our chinchilla too!" for our door but haven't put it up yet.
Hurricane Katrina also got us thinking. In case of an actual evacuation Maggie has a small carrying cage near her cage, including an empty food bowl and small water bottle, some chew sticks, a chin box and some bedding.
Included in our disaster supply kit is a bag of Maggie's supplies, pellets and hay in airtight containers, a few bottle of aqua blox, the chin first aid kit and a few chinchilla books. We have most of the supplies but we're still working on getting the last of them included in Joyce's article "Emergency Evacuation Kits for our Chinchillas, Are You Prepared?"
Last summer we had a horrible heat wave and blackouts, my mother in law because the official chin sitter. When we lose power etc. we take her over there. If we had to seriously evacuate since shelters won't allow non-service animals we talked to our vet and got a list of animal shelters and pet sitters that have disaster plans and will accept animals in that sort of event.
