I try to stay away from the pet store chews, they are very expensive and my chins tear through them quickly.  But if you have the space and inclination to do it...I went to  Lowe's and bought a piece of untreated pine lumber 3x4x12
I cut it down into one-inch blocks and then drilled holes through the middle of each block and strung them up on chain that I also got from Lowe's.  They make great hanging toys and last forever.  My cages all have one that hangs from top to bottom of the cage.  They have been chewing on them for several months now, but since they are hanging toys they don't get peed on or soiled like the loose toys do, so they last a while, and the whole thing cost me about $25.00 and a few hours of my time.

I also buy mixed bags from pets products by nature.  From time to time they have specials with good prices.  Last month I bought a 3lb bag of mixed chews for around $20.  I am not even 1/3 of the way through the bag, and I give each cage 3-4 toys every few days.  I like the chews they sell because they are all-natural, safe woods for chins, reasonably priced, and seem to last longer than the wood chews I found in pet stores.

Yes I make mine from pine too. Even cut them up into sticks for them to chew.
Grape vines from the craft store are awesome, they come is strands and ready made items like wreaths, pretty cheap.
I save all my Tim Horton cup holders, small boxes, and I get large very hard cardboard tubes from purolater currier that are shipped to the hospitals. My son-in-law works at one and collects them up for me and my daughter.
You can get smaller ones from your local news paper, it's the center of their paper rolls.I get them empty for a dollar each and with left over paper for 4 dollars each. They last forever.
I took a kiddies slide from my neighbors garbage,It broke off from the swing set.I hung one end from eye hooks under their cages, and put a wood ramp up for them to get up on it. They love it,and use it every night.A bit of dust or baby powder really gets them going.
It's amazing how much fun the can have with old boxes. I stack them, open some, turn some upside down, even cut holes for their amusement.

Oh Debbie, I love the box idea!  It must be like a jungle gym/maze for them.  I can't wait to try that with my guys!
