When you travel to different places to shows and you have to stay in a hotel, do you take anything more then a carrying cage? It seems they would need more room then that overnight so I was wondering what other people in that situation have done in the past to make sure the chins were happy. Better yet- what do you normally take in general to shows, other then your own chinchillas?

I have yet to show my chins personally, but I have traveled with them on many occasions.  I take them in a carrier, place shavings in the bottom, and provide them with hay cubes/loose hay/wooden blocks and a piece of apple to help keep them hydrated on the trip.  I have a water bottle to offer them a drink during stops.  I take an ice chest with frozen water bottles incase the car breaks down and the chins need something cool to lean against while I wait for assistance.  Chinchillas can do just fine without being taken out for exercise while on a trip or going to a show.

I just know my chins hate being in our little carrying cages for long at all.

I have found that chinchillas prefer the small carrier as the trip tends to make them nervous.  We only just bring the chins in the carrier, water bottles, grooming items (combs, lint roller, scissors, emery board) and an apron so you won't be covered in hair all day after you groom.

Like Jamie, I've found that my chins prefer the small carrier when traveling.  They squish themselves into a corner and wait to be back home.

smaller carriers are more convientent and make the chin feel safer when transporting.  I mean could you imagine trying to lug a cage around would be quite hard, and carriers seem to give them more of a dark surrounding which makes them feel more secure and safe.
