weird behaviour
« on: October 22, 2007, 10:59:39 PM »

hi i let out my chinchilla today to play... and it was doing fine for a while when it suddently put one side of its ears to the floor and started spinning.....  and then afterwards it just wasnt as active as before and just sat.  I thought it was frightened because i only got her for 5 days... but it still let me scratch her and pet her... i was wondering could it be something i did wrong?!?

I can't tell for sure what happened.  But my first thoughts would be:

1) heat seizure, from getting overheated after too much play...

                    OR

2) maybe something like an ear infection or mites, though I think that would have been more of a scratching behavior, and you would have seen it as more of a continuing behavior.

Regardless, I would recommend a vet visit to an exotic animal vet with chinchilla experience.

Maybe s/he found a bit of dust on the floor and thought it was a chinchilla dust bath and tried to spin in it. Mine always put their head down first before they spin. Sometimes they (Cheech) spin their head so the top of it is on the floor and flip their whole body over themselves. That one's fun to watch.  :::grins::
