Show questions: Im new, need help.
« on: July 29, 2007, 09:42:52 PM »

OK so. im new here, and just getting used to things..
But my question is for those who show their chinchillas. I got my baby boy today, and once hes older, Im thinking of finding a chinchilla show near my location. [for fun, not for hard core showing ::)] Iv'e never been to one, or know if one is close to where i live, but once i find out i will go to them often.

What requirements and what do you do before your chinchillas first show?
Is there a certin weight, hight, age they have to be?

anything else would be great!
Thank you very much!

If you need help finding shows in your area you can post in the Local Chat section.  That was you don't have to tell your exact location if you don't want to but you can find shows in your region of the USA.

You are allowed to show a chinchilla at any age but before about 4 months is pointless since they are still too young.  I try to shoot for 7 months as that is when they are coming into their first prime and are usually at their very best.

You will need to dust every day the last month of the show but stop about 3 days before to give all of the dust time to get out of the fur so its true color will show.  The less you handle your chinchilla during this time the better it will do.  Oils from your hands will make the hair want to lay down more and will count against its fur quality.

You will need some good chinchilla combs and you will want to do a good brushing from tail to head.  Practice brushing well before the show date because if you mess up you will pull out clumps of fur.  You want to give them plenty of time to grow back before your first show. Many times there are breeders at the show wiling to help you groom if you are uncomfortable with it.

You only need your chinchilla, its color, date of birth, and the name of the breeder to show.  Show cages are provided at the show.   :)

Can you get in touch with the breeder to get it?  You will need to know the birthday because that tells which class he is placed in to be judged.  The judge will often use the birthday to help determine judging.
