Pet store chinnies
« on: September 01, 2008, 05:30:40 PM »

Hi everyone!  Today I bought a black velvet from a pet store.  I've had great luck with pet stores around here in RI, and my female I've had for over a year now is fantastic.  Both are very healthy, lively and friendly.  I was hoping to mate them at least once before possibly neutering the male.

But not I've read that it's not recommended to breed pet store chins.  I'm pretty bummed about it.  Does anyone know the risks and percent chances of bad traits being passed on?   ::shrug::

Please, any information or advise you have would be so helpful.  Thanks a ton, in advance! :-\

After doing some reading and research I realize I should not breed my chinnies.  I would like to have my male neutered to prevent it from happening.  I read the post about age for spaying, but does anyone know how old a male should be before he's neutered?  Mine's 6 months old.  No big deal to wait though, I have two separate cages and plenty of time...

Thanks!

I don't think there is an age requirement.
Just make sure you have a knowlegable vet, and are aware of the complications that could arise.
Others have seen problems but I have not.

I would just get him a same sex mate, rather than neutering him.  There are many complications that can be involved, it is very risky for chinchillas.  Most anyone will tell you to get a same sex mate.

I have found a very knowledgeable vet who has neutered several chinchillas.  I am meeting with him to give him an intense interview before I agree to the procedure.  I have done my research now and am prepared with questions.  If I"m not comfortable, I won't have it done.

I love my new little baby and cannot give him away.  I would like the two I have now to be able to be buddies (even if just outside the cage) without the chance of pregnancy.  Getting another cage mate of the same sex isn't really an option.  I don't have room for three chinchillas and their cages.

Thanks for all the advice! ;)

Today I made a difficult decision.  I decided to return Diego to the pet store to look for a female kit for Lulu's companion.  He was the sweetest most adorable little thing.  He was already grooming me after having him only 9 days!  But, I decided it was just the best thing to do for all the chinchillas involved.  Giving him a risky and costly operation just to make myself happy was the wrong thing to do.

On a different note, I've found a lovely tan kit that's 10 weeks old, and hand raised in RI.  I'm naming her Zsa Zsa and bringing her home tomorrow.

yay!

Beth,

What a tough decision!  It sounds like he was a sweetie.  I really respect you for putting his interests and well-being above what you wanted.  It shows just how much you love your animals.

I am sure he will find another good home where he will be loved.
