3 little darling babies
« on: April 16, 2008, 06:27:56 PM »

We had 3 darling babies born on Sunday, 4-13th.  They are my first litter born from a white ebony.  There were 2 white ebonies and 1 dark if not extra dark ebony.  Sorry to say, my little dark ebony passed away last evening (2 days later). :'(  Not sure why--he seemed to have part of his upper lip missing. Need to research this area.  If anyone has ever heard of this type of thing, I would like some info on it.  I think it may have interferred with his eating.  Tried feeding him with a syringe, also.  No luck.  He weighed 42 gms. on Sunday at birth, then went down to 40gms., then 34gms. Tues. & I lost him last evening.  The other 2 are doing great & are so adorable.  Can't post any pictures, though.  I haven't learned how to do that, yet.  I'm sure they will grow up to be gorgeous.      JANE

Hi Jane,

Congratulations on your Kits!   :::grins::
But, of course, I am saddened to hear of your loss.    :'(
Breeding chinchillas can come with good and bad.  You have just experienced both.

In my opinion, the loss of your kits lip resulted in the young ones fighting for food.  In the past I have had kits that fight and the first areas they go for are the mouth and nose.  With an injured mouth and nose they will not be able to nurse and die.  It is a terrible thing to have happen, but it is survival of the fittest.

Best of luck with your new ones....keep a close eye on them.  If you see the kits fight, you may have to move one to a surrogate mom or take turns giving the kits one on one time with mom so they can get individual nursing time.

Congrats on the babies! I hope you enjoy them! But that is so sad! Was the baby born without an upper lip? Maybe it was just a birth defect, but did you find blood in the cage? That also could have been from fighting.

Congrats on the babies Jane and I'm sorry to hear about your loss.

If you want to email me the pics, I can resize them and post them for you.
