HELP!!!!!
« on: August 03, 2009, 04:20:16 PM »

I went to check on tink after dinner for our nightly play time, only to find her a little bloody and EATING something. I spazzed, got Tink right out, Had my hubby see what she was eating.. and he says he THINKS it was a baby, muzzle and all. I didnt think Chins ate their young, and to be honest didnt even know Tink was expecting, we have only had her 3 weeks and shes an only chin in her cage (( roo is caged seperate and I dont let them play )) So I am assuming I got her already expecting, but am now at a total loss. I have her in here with me, moved the cage so iI can monitor it , its just. WOW. I feel awful, like I am a horrid chin mom, I mean heck she was fat but we got her fat so I didnt think anything of it.. I just feel so bad.. Is there any way to tell if there are more kits? she let me palpatate her tummy and I didnt FEEL anything, but then again I didnt know in the first place. I didnt think chins ate their young so it just has me so horridly confused.

That`s crazy! I thought that chinchillas were herbivores. Strange. Maybe at the vet they can look at her and x-ray or what ever they do to look at babies in humans tummies.  I think they could do that, but it is just a thought.

I have not seen one yet eat a fetus, just the afterbirth. I am sure it must happen though. It must have been deformed/underdeveloped, or cocooned.
I'd get her to a vet, there could be something left inside.

::silly::  I haven't seen any eat the fetus either.  It must have been very underdeveloped.  They do eat the afterbirth to help them restore what was lost in the pregnancy and boost the immune system.

Do you know if this was her first litter?

Do you know how old she is?

The stress of moving her from one person to another could have caused the miscarriage.

Never palpitate the tummy of a female that you even think could possibly be pregnant  or one that you think may not have finished delivering yet ... you could easily kill one that is not already dead.  It's best to let the vet do that.

Chinchillas have two uterus ... one on each side ... if she was, and is still pregnant on the other side ... it will be touch and go with it.  Be extra gentle and careful with her.

::think::   It is strange the breeder would sell a chin that has actively been in breeding.    ::think::  You might want to call and ask if they knew she was pregnant and was this her first litter.  If it is not her first litter and she has had problems with litters before, personally, I would not allow her to go back into a breeding situation.  It is to stressful, especially if she keeps miscarrying.
