Question on Changes/Lonliness & eating habits
« on: July 19, 2009, 02:11:31 PM »

Okay my chinchilla's cage is in my bedroom.
On thursday I really cleaned out the place and reorginized my furniture. Charz's cage got moved to a different place and he seemed fine with it. I bought him a new wooden hut on friday wich he seems to enjoy, and then I spent friday night at a friends house.
Whenever I leave overnight by brother keeps Charlie company and makes shure my room doesnt get too hot. But I noticed that he didnt eat anything while I was gone, but he started eating some food this morning.

Do you think that this eating thing is because of the change in his cage location or him being lonly when I was gone?
Im really concerned, because Im going on vacation next moth, and I dont want to leave him if its the lonlyness thing D:

Either reason may have caused your chin to eat less.  Not drinking enough water will also cause a chin to eat less so be sure he is getting plenty of water.

he might be a little flustered because of the change in his cage. Chins move around based on their memory of where everything is located and if things were moved in his cage he might be confused and want to stay in one place. When you came back he might've felt more comfortable knowing you were there and he decided he was hungry  :) Just give him a couple days to get used to it and he should be fine!

::silly::   At chinchilla shows most chinchillas will not eat/drink the normal amounts until they return home.    Chinchillas do not like change ... as a general rule.  Chinchillas do miss their human parents when they are gone.  Chinchillas like a regular routine ... apparently, with you gone, the routine was changed.   Chinchillas will often eat/drink less when there is a change in the routine and/or surroundings ... all three things happened within 24 hours for this little one.  I can understand why Charz became unhappy/upset and did not eat.

Where will Charz be and who will he be with while you are on vacation?  Starting now, having this person become a bit of the regular routine could help Charz cope while you are on vacation.

How long will you be gone?

Making recordings of you talking to him and letting the chinsitter play it for him might be an idea to consider.  Making sure the chinsitter knows how important it is to stick to a routine will also help Charz.  If there are special times you normally watch t.v. or listen to the radio in the same room with him, you might think about setting the t.v. and/or radio on timers while you are gone.

Our chins love to listen to music and even have favorite t.v. shows.   They're spoiled rotten!   :D

Just some things to consider.   :::grins::

He'll be at my friend Rachel's house and she'll be taking care of him.
Her, and her Chinchilla will be staying at my house these next two weeks, so that will probly help him get adjusted to her right?

and I'll be gone for a week. :(
