Can Chins travel?
« on: September 12, 2009, 01:51:16 PM »

I am moving to the UK in February and really want to take my chin with me.  Can they stand the long flight?  Better yet will he be able to endure being in quarantine for 6 months?

::silly::  Some chinchillas react better to travel than others and some will just freak out.   We have traveled 6+ hours road trips with different chins ... some would sleep most of the way, some would have to be held and comforted most of the way, while a few rare ones like to ride on Bill's shoulder and enjoy the view the whole trip.  Sorry about being so vague, but, it really depends on the chin and the conditions around it when traveling.

I do know you will have to get a certificate of good health from your vet before he/she goes anywhere on an airplane.

I think I would be more concerned about the 6 month quarantine and the quality of informed care he would receive there.

How old is your chin and how long have you had him/her?

Where abouts are you moving to?
I may be able to do a little bit of research for you into the place where he would be quarantined and see how knowledgeable they are. And also give advice on looking after him.

Six months is a long time but when chins can live for up to 20 years you have to weigh out the pros and cons, not just for yourself but for your chinchilla. Would he prefer to go to another home where he would miss you for a bit and then settle in (you'd have to find him a good home where you would be sure he was looked after) or would he prefer to miss you for six months and then see you again.  It's a really hard decision.
