is my chinchilla okay?
« on: February 15, 2010, 09:35:38 PM »

so, I'm a little nervous because I saw a video on youtube about fungus that can grow on chinchillas feet, and I realized that my chinhcilla boo's feet look a little like that. I also noticed a little spot on his nose that worries me, it might just be a cut, but still. also, behind his ears are weirdly colored, and I was wondering what's up with that. and I was wondering if his coat is healthy. here are the links for the pictures.

The pictures of his coat look fine.  I couldn't tell anything from the feet, nose, and ears pictures.  I'm guessing the foot video you saw was on brumblefoot.  Healthy chinchillas who live on wire floored/shelved cages will get callouses on their feet  which look dry and might peel.  On rare occasions (usually dirty situations) the feet can become infected and turn into brumblefoot.  I'm sure your chinchilla most likely has normal  dry feet from cage ware.  Chinchilla ears can dry out.  This is mainly due to the dust bath.  You can rub a little baby oil in to help with that.  I would need a better picture of the nose to comment on that one.  :)

okay, thanks!
and yeah, the little red spot on his nose is gone now, so I imagine it couldn't have been anything too serious.
I put the dab of baby oil on the back of his ear and it seems to be fine now :::grins::

He looks great.
I think the ear thing your seeing is normal, close to the head there is very little fur,and can look a little pinker than the top of the ear.
The nose looked a little rubbed, does he poke it through the cage bars looking for your attention?  ;)
I don't have any wire bottoms but still have a few with dry feet, and some of the older ones can get an edge of callus on them. They try to chew it off and sometimes make them bleed.

i just have to tell you a little story. when i first got my chins, for about the first year, everytime we went to the vet, i would be like... look at his noise.. does he have fungus.. to me it looked like a little bare spot, but it wasn't, it was just me being so paranoid.

your guy looks great
