thinks pogo may have fleas
« on: October 28, 2010, 12:19:17 PM »

So i know i'v read on here that chinchillas can't get fleas because there fur is to thick in less they are in poor condition. My parents were going to of town so i wanted my cats to live with me while they were gone, they usually live at my b/f's bc my family has allergies to cats. We found out they had fleas and bought flea collers. We thought they were gone, but then found out the the colors don't work. I still have some fleas at my house.

I got the cats on a Thursday, and Pogo's wrapping was getting taken off on Friday, from when he broke his foot. For a month and  half he was not allowed to use a dust bath. I notice that he is icing a lot. Could that be bc he has fleas? He won't stay still enough while i hold him to check. My other chin doesn't seem to be iching. I ended up having the cats here for a month or so. They'v been gone for 2 and a half weeks now.

you are right about flea colors they do not work at all.. they only work around the neck area, not the whole body.  the best way to get rid of them is to spray or bomb your place, but make sure your chinchillas are in a safe place.. they also have sprays that work.. i have had to use the sprays myself.. and my chins have their own bedroom which no carpeting so what i did was close the door and put towels near the bottom of the door [the inch gap] and sprayed.. i actually sprayed the rooms at different times so it didn't get over bearing with smell.. you can get something with residual effects so spraying that way will work.. i also sprayed again in about 4 or 6 weeks [whatever the bottle said] for when the eggs hatched.. also vacumn alot and then empty it out outside.  also do your furniture.

as for if chins can get fleas, i have actually saw a few times that they can around their face area because the fur in thin, but what i read could be wrong... if you want to make sure, you may want to check with your vet.

a great way to find out how bad the infestion with the fleas are is to do this:

if you have a lamp or some type of light that can actually be right over a dish, fill the dish with water and some detergent, at night when you go to bed, have all the lights off and just put that one lamp on.. what happens is that the fleas jump for the light and end up in the dish with the soap and die.. so when you get up the next day, if you have alot of fleas you have a big infestion, if you have just a few its not that bad, if you have none, i would repeat it again in another room..
i hope that made sense.
best of luck to you.

Wow, i have never heard that again. I'll have to try it tom night. I can't sleep with the light on. Do you know what the brand of spray you used was? My b/f apt had fleas bad, but thats cause they mostly live with him. I'll find out on sat if they still have fleas when they get there shots. I hope they don't. They are on frontline plus. Thanks a bunch. I got spray but its hard to tell if it works or not.

any soap will do, soap will kill fleas.. even if you wash your cat whatever shampoo you use will kill the fleas,  however if its not flea soap, there is no residual affects, but it will definately kill what is on him.

as for the light thing, just put it in another room, it doens't have to be a big light, i juse use a small lamp, lean it over the dish so it's directly above it, and like i said, they jump for the light and land in the dish. i have done this many times..darn fleas.. i've been getting them every year even tho i put that stuff on my dogs.

the picture isn't good here, but this is it

I was wondering what flee meds you put on your dog. Maybe your not using the right kind of flee meds and thats why the keep getting flees.

i always use the stuff you get at the vets.. i've used all of them..

one year i called up bayer [because they make one of them] and they told me i could be bringing them in, which does make sense, so i quess i shouldn't of said the dogs get them every year, but this house certainly has been over the past few years.. pain in the butt.

glad they are off the cat .

Well i finally did that flee test this week. I know a little late. But when I woke up i didn't see any, so i guess thats good. I'm still paranoid and don't know if that really worked, but i haven't seen anymore. Still been spraying. Pogo is still scratching, but not as much. So i'll prob take him in to see. The vet said they have stuff to treat flees on chins. I'm not sure what though. I'v knoticed also that in a spot on his side towards the back the hair looks a little matted and i was wondering why. I sow him today, he was i guess chewing on it. I don't know if was trying to scratched. He didn't pull out any fur or anything. I know thats not normal and would feel better if i took him in.

just to make sure eggs don't hatch and live [unless you used something with residual affect]  try the dish thing again , i'm not sure how long it takes for the eggs to hatch, but i'm sure its someplace online.

as for treating the chins, i would be nervous about that, i'm not telling you what to do, but i've heard many horrow stories about some cats that had problems with some of those meds...and with they way chins are so fragile, i would just worry.

i know. I always worry about them, alot more then my kittys. I'd def find out what it is before the vet put it on him. He is a real good vet though. He only sees chins, birds and bunnys.
