newspaper safe for them to eat?
« on: November 14, 2010, 03:04:10 PM »

I was wondering if its safe for them to eat a little bit of newspaper? I read to them, the comics and they try to eat the newspaper. I try to not let them. Just wondering if its ok if they get a little bit every now and then or if i should try to be extra safe.

ya know i just have to ramble on even if i don't know the answer, why i have no clue.. haha.

i have heard controversy about newspapers, some people have said the ink is safe because of what it's made out of, and other people have said its not, but i have heard more people say it is safe than not.

but from what you said, i'm thinking if hes just taking a nibble, its probably not where the ink is because you are holding it reading and the edges are just plain paper, and a few bites here and there should be fine.

i keep paper towels on top of the cages, because i use them alot in there,  try to keep the roll on the back of the cage because there is cloth up there and they can't reach it, but ever once in awhile, when i put the paper towels back on top of the cage, i put it on the part of that cage top that isn't covered with cloth and of course they reach thew and eat/chew it...

that is right. They aren't getting the ink. I'm sure if i let them, they'd destroy it in a few mins and i'd have a fun mess to clean up. If you don't want them to chew on it, couldn't you put it on the floor? Make sure they aren't chewing on the cloth. I used to do that and i noticed them chewing on it. I use fleese now.

oh its not that they get threw the cloth or anything, sometimes i just forget to put it on top of the cloth, so they can reach thew the cge top...  i have so much chin stuff [omg they have more than i do] that i also use their cage tops for storage.

Most inks now are made from vegetable dies and are non toxic. At least ours is, I checked. Though I prefer to but some unprinted as they leave tracks all over the cage.
