wasting hay
« on: June 23, 2012, 06:21:53 AM »

Hey guys, my chins seem to like throwing their hay around and wasting it rather than eating it.....  :flames: is there any way I can get them to eat their hay, i mean they eat some but most of it ends up tossed out at the end of the week

First, make sure your hay is fresh.  If not they will be less likely to eat it.  Try stuffing the hay in a toilet paper tube to help keep it contained.

Meekeemee will dine on the hay like a proper gentleman . Selecting a nice bit and munching calmly. Chuppers goes for the hay and pushes it all over the place and makes a mess before stuffing her face . I think its pretty common for me anyway to clean the cage and it be more hay than aspen in the bottom LOL.

My chins got sooooo bad about doing this so I bought a hay box and it has been much more under control since, I've probably cut my hay costs in half because they were throwing it at each other and it would end up on the fleece where they peed!

I got it from http://twilightchinchillastoysandmore.weebly.com/
I'm not sure exactly what kind of wood she used to make it but she has a list of the all the woods she uses for everything. I got the hay holder with a shelf. Its really helped with all the hay waste, and they seem to have lots of fun getting inside the box and eating to their heart's content haha  :::grins::
