chinchilla sat in pee...how to dry?
« on: August 20, 2012, 02:35:24 AM »

Hello...my chinchilla seems to have sat in her iwn pee and i was wondering how i can dry her without causing too much stress? She does not like to be held at all. She will jump on me and let me hold her in ny hands close to my body but as soon as she feels any kind of pressure being applied she runs...which is to be expected from a prey animal...especially since she was a pet shop chin. I cant really hold her to dry her. Will it dry by itself without promoting fungus growth? It is quite wet...wet enough to leave a wet spot on the top of her house. Any advice is appreciates. Thanks in advance.

I wouldn't worry about it unless you think it will by like that all day.
Giving a dust bath will help too and may work instead of towel drying.  Just change the dust immediately.

Im not too worried about staining since that will eventually grow out...i just dont want any type of fungus growing.

If it is damp all day that would be bad but I don't know how bad it is. I think a dust bath would have a drying effect.

If you're still worried about it wrap her up in a towel to restrain her and dab the area with the towel. If you do this efficiently there shouldn't be too much stress. She will try to get away and struggle. If you secure her tight enough to prevent kicking and flailing it will actually have a comforting effect and keep her from injuring herself. She'll get over it.

I agree with gray rodent.  Give a bath, not only to dry the fur, but to clean it too.

Try moving things around so she doesn't have her favourite place to pee and sit. ;)

Yeah i got it all sorted out...from time to time she will pee on the upper level of yhe cage where the shavings arent. I just disinfect the top tray and put a couple sticks there and its alright for a while. Not quite sure why she does it sometimes...i clean her cage every morning so theres never any pee or poop in there for longer than twelve hours or so.

But yeah she does just go in the bottom section where the shavings are 99% of the time.
