We have a year old standard male. I think he is bored in his big cage by himself.  We have lots of activities for him, but I think a playmate is needed. Any idea where I might find a female around the same age in Vermont (southern) .thank you

Well you need to wit till the female is 8-12 months old to put her with a male. You will get kits.

Your best bet is a young male, and even then they may not get along.

No Gilbert is not neutered. If they happen to have kits (I'm sure they would) we would keep them anyway. Wouldn't mind a young male. Just afraid they wouldn't get along.

Well, there are issues with chinchillas having kits. For example, I wanted to breed Snickerdoodle- a pet shop chinchilla- until I learned that since he was from a pet store, his lineage is questionable. This issue was further enhanced when he started fur chewing, a habit that would not be good if passed to a kit.

The female also needs to be 8-12 months old, depending on when she passes the thumb test. You will have to wait to put them together.
Yes always the chance they won't get along.
Then if they have 2 kits you will need more cages to avoid the mom from breeding back to back and/or breeding with relatives. 4 kits per year and you soon end up with a basement full of cages.
