I am wondering if a really good male & female with good backgrounds would occasionally throw out a pet quality kit.
I ask as 2 very experienced people gave me a different answer.
One person said yes even a high quality pairing can throw out a pet quality kit & one person said a very firm no.

I would assume (just guessing here) that the answer would be yes.  As no animal has perfect genes, each animal may carry some less desirable genes, without displaying those particular traits themselves.  So it would stand to reason that there is a possibility that the parents could both throw their less desirable genes, which would result in a pet quality kit.

Again, I do not know this for sure.  Just my guess.  I would love to hear from the more experienced breeders on this.

Absolutely they can!  I see it in my own herd.  Every once in awhile I will get an ugly chinchilla from great lines.  Its all in the way the genetic dice fall.

Everyone has their own opinions ... based on their own experiences and experiences of other they know.
    I would have to give you a definite yes on this ... I have seen two beautiful chins (both show winners and in my herd) that have produced high quality and pet quality chinchillas in the same litter.
    By talking with some of the older breeders, I have been told over the years that you have a better chance of producing a high quality chin with high quality parents, but nothing is ever guaranteed.  It depends on the genes each one throws to each kit.
    I also have a pair of parents that are both small, but every kit they have produced over the last 6 years (except for 2) have all grown to be larger than either parent.  They have had a total of 23 kits 19 extra dark ebony and 4 medium ebony.
    Like I said ... my opinion ... my own experience.

Yes, Not all chins produced are show quality. I assume when you say they have good backgrounds you mean they show winners in their line.
I have been at a show where the judge said the chin had 1st place fur quality, but it was a black velvet and didn't have a pure white belly so it was not allowed to place. Also the judge stated that it would go great in a eb breeding line. You can have a great quality chin and it still may not be a show quality chin.

I have to say yes as well.
Even out side the normal problems that can cause it, such as breed back, stress, or even a minor injury you may never be aware of.
My standard pair has thrown a couple of brown tinged kits over their 5 years together.
I have had big parents throw tiny kits.
So despite all our best efforts, not all kits will be breeding/show quality.
