Is cement harmful for chins?
« on: October 20, 2017, 09:29:56 AM »

To be more specific...

My problem is I have 2 chins and they love lava ledges. Both chew on them but my newest one will eat through 1 a week. I've tried purchasing these in bulk but the best price I could get is 4.75$ each.

I'm wanting to make some myself using pumice powder but pumice powder in itself won't form a block and frankly large pumice rocks are a bit expensive.

So I was looking into light weight concrete which is cenet mixed with pumice. The finished product looks indentical to the ledges from kaytee or all things living.

Is cemet harmful to chins? I'm not sure how much pumice is consumed if anything but their health is my main concern before I build my own.

Id also like to build other lightweight concret things other than just jumping ledges.

Honestly I don't know. If I'm going to guess I would say cement has lime in it which is toxic. After it's cured I'm not sure how safe it is though.
I recommend finding a source of raw pumice. It should be a lot cheaper than a lava ledge and you might be able to insert the lava ledge fasteners into them. Raw pumice is known to be safe for chinchillas.

Well I do understand some forms of concrete contain Lyme. However lightweight concrete contains pumice water and cemet. I have pumice powder and by itself it's just sand it won't ever become a rock without some form of glue

You can get pumice rocks in larger chunks as well. Like I said regarding cement I just don't know.
