Looking for a fan for my chins.
« on: June 29, 2006, 01:06:03 PM »

I was on here looking 1 day and saw a fan that held a frozen bottle of water and it looked like it hooked behind the fan some how. If anyone knows what I am talking about can you please tell me the site so I can get 1. I want to get it and see how much it really cools off. My husband wants to cut my A/C off in the mornings when he is getting ready for work because he is cold but I don't want to do that to my chins.

Every morning when he gets up he will go cut it off and then I cut it back on with in a few mins.  :::grins:: He gets so mad and tells me I am going to freeze him and the kids.

What do you keep your A/C set at? I keep mine at 75 degrees 24 hours a day. Mine usually isn't on in the mornings when I wake up.
I did see a portable desk A/C that uses Ice to cool. It looked pretty cool. It was on www.abcdistributing.com

I don't think the chins would mind a little warmth.
No need to freeze the family :D
I have to laugh I could just hear my crowd now, more oats than a farmers field. :D

hi

i have a question then. i read some where that chins don't like being warm. that's why they make grante blocks that can freeze and get really cold. they you put the block in the cage and it cools them off.

~steph

p.s-but i can see where you are coming from saying that they should get a little warmth. you wouldn't want a Chinny-cicle would you, hahaha rofl

::silly::Yall would freeze at our house ... 68 year round.   :-[

The granite and/or marble blocks/slabs are usually just used temporarily and/or in an emergency ... or if you keep the temp to high for a chin.

Some people will fill a mason jar with ice (tight lid, please) and put it in the cage if their air breaks down ... it cools the chins and they lick the water condensations off the sides of the jar.

Chinchillas do not sweat, they cool their body through the veins in the ears.  It's not so much they don't like to be warm ... they can have a heat stroke if they get to hot.  Humidity can often play as much a part of heat for a chin, as the temperature itself.

Rule of thumb ... temperature + humidity = total A total under 150 is safe for a chinchilla.  A total over 150 can mean trouble for a chinchilla.  If you notice a chin's ears getting pinker or red, they are over heating (of course that's hard to see when you chin's ears are dark gray or black).

I keep the A/C at 72 to 75, but my husband seems to think that is really cold when he wakes up in the mornings.

It has been so hot the last few days that I have been freezing can goods and putting them in the cages. Tues. our A/C never cut off and I could not get it under 80. One of my chins ears are white and I kept checking him and he was fine, but we put a window unit in just to be safe and that brought it down to 75 with in about 15 mins. I have now started going home at lunch to cut the window unit on. The humidity seems to stay at 40.

Ye'd all freeze here too  :D
I can't work when it's over 65, and like my chins room at 55 most of the year.
I don't think it ever goes over 65.
I don't have the main house any warmer if I can help it.
When in Florida I found a big difference in outside to inside with AC. Here we go down to the chins room to cool off.
