Ihave two questions
« on: October 26, 2007, 09:59:02 AM »

Hi

Question 1

  I have changed my chinchilla food (Prestige Premium Chinchilla Nature) to oxbow Chinchilla Deluxe and one of my chinchilla always dumps the bowl. >:(

I have mixed the two food.

Week 1 1/4 Oxbow
Week 2 1/2 Oxbow
Week 3 3/4 Oxbow
Week 4 100% Oxbow
Is there a solution? ::think::

Question 2

  How heavy must a 3 Month old chinchilla be?

What were you feeding before?  It sounds like your chinchilla doesn't like the new food.

Each chinchilla is different.  There isn't a set 3 month weight.  It all depends on its color, genetics, birth weight, number of kits in the litter, mother's amount of milk, type of feed, ect....

Is the picture of the new or old food? The food should be only pellets.. not all that other stuff thats in the picture.

You just wean them slowly and if they aren't eating it then maybe they just don't like it.  ::shrug::

the pic is the old food. I think she is looking to find the treats from the old food.

 ::silly::  I'm glad that is the old food in the picture.  It is full of treats!  A three-month-old chin does not need any treats, but can be given one a  day.  Your job is to get them away from a very bad habit.

It might help if you look at it as a kid who has grown up with sweets everyday, as many as they want and has never been made to eat their vegetables, or anything that is really good for him/her.  When you get rid of/take away all the sweets and feed them nothing but vegetables ... that child is going to refuse to eat ... until he/she really gets hungry.  They usually don't last long, once they get hungry.   ::nod::

You might want to try hand feeding the chins, this way, you are taking away one thing that they want (treats) and replacing it with something else that they want/enjoy, your attention.   After they eat the pellets from you, then let them have a tiny pinch of one treat, then more pellets ... keep repeating this ... they learn quickly.   :::grins::  If they don't eat their 'spinach' they don't get any 'ice-cream ... they should come around.

The formula for changing over from one food to another food is a good one ... but, I don't consider the 'food' in the picture real chinchilla food, but more like 'junk food' ... that will take allot of time and patients on your part.      :)

I agree with Jamie.   ::nod::

Just give them good food, hay, and fresh water daily.  And lots of TLC and they should be fine.   :::grins::

With the food that they were on, it might not be a bad idea to give them a good chinchilla supplement.  Their growing months are very important.

 ::silly::  There are several that are ready-made on the internet that can be ordered on line  OR, if you want to mix it yourself, check out http://www.cachins.org/ California Chins and click on food ... there are several recipes there for good supplements.  ;)
