Giardia symptoms in chins
« on: February 20, 2008, 10:57:23 AM »

Can someone remind me of the giardia symptoms in chins?  They aren't exhibiting any, but I am!  I've been sick off and on since our honeymoon in St. Lucia.  We survived a hurricane, among other horribleness, and we chalked my symptoms up to stress until this last week.  I"ve been tested for many things, including giardia, and am waiting for the results.  I"m worried about the girls.  I've been keeping my hands clean, and obsessive about cleaning their cage.  I just hope I don't give them anything.   :'(

Thanks for your help.

My chin has really sticky soft poo, and some of the people on here suggest I get her tested for giardia, so I know that is one sign. I hope everything is okay!

Unfortunately, as with most illnesses chins will mask their symptoms.  Weight loss, a change in eating habits, and of course, change in poo consistency are all early warning signs.  The mucous covering the poo may also be an indicator, but I am not entirely certain of that.  With Giardia, once the animal has reached a full infection they will have all-out diahrrea, not just soft poop.  However, softer poo can be an early indicator, as the symptoms escalate as the parasite multiplies.  Of course, one of the major concerns with diahrrea is that the chin can become very dehydrated, very quickly.  A dehydrated chin will be lethargic and will not eat.  By this time however, you have on sick chinnie on your hands.

The basic rule of thumb is this:  you know your animal the best.  If you think something may be wrong, go with your gut and calll/take it to the vet for a checkup.  Over time, you will be able to learn what constitutes a dire emergency and what you can maybe treat yourself.

Well, I didn't help the situation too much the other night.  I left their side cage door open again after cleaning     I haven't done it since I first got them.  We only use that door during cleaning, because they can't get back in!  They were out in the room all night.  It's mostly chin proof, but my main concern is that they haven't eaten enough.   They stayed in last night, but only ate half their hay, and there's still some pellets left.  Their poop is normal, and M;noke was on the wheel, and they were barking last night (which is usually Kira).  I was just thinking they were tired.  If I have soemthing contageous, I'll take them to the vet, or if they're still the same today.  If they're energetic tonight, I won't worry.   :(
