how do you make hammocks and fleece tubes
« on: April 14, 2009, 07:56:40 AM »

I want to make my own hammocks and fleece tubes, but I don't know how. It will give me something to do on weekends.

Well, first of all you need to know the seams should not show. Meaning, you sew most of the edge, and then flip it inside out. I am not much of a sewing person, but I am getting there. I haven't ever made a tube, but you could pm Gella and ask her. She is a sewing wizard!  rofl   ::silly::

::silly::  Don't feel lonesome, hugoawens, I've been on this forum for many years and I don't know who Gella is.   :D

Caution on these fleece tubes and hammocks.  Remember, chinchillas chew on everything they can get their little teeth into, they will surely do so on the fleece tube, in addition to urinating in/on them and pooping in an on them ... Fleece is washable, but it also is known to shrink.  Between the needing to be washed and the chin's chewing, I don't think they would last long.  The dye in the fabric is also another question that might concern me.

:)  A tube tunnel made of white PVC pipe is more durable, will last longer and is easily washed.   :::grins::  As a matter of fact, that tube tunnel in the picture looks like a PVC pipe covered with fleece.

Always remember: Those things that are manufactured for animals, are often not manufactured with the animals in mind, but with what might seem the most pleasing to the eye of the human that purchases them   $$$  regardless what the consequences may be to the animal.

The fleece tunnel tube I want ...

Chinchillas are very happy with a 5 or 6-sided hut made of pine, a lookout 4-sided box made of wood attached to the inside top of the cage, a tube made of PVC pipe as a lookout attached to the top of the cage, and/or a "Y" or "T" shaped 4 to 6" diameter PVC pipe placed on the bottom floor to play on and sleep in.  Handmade wood chew sticks.

Not only do the chins enjoy it as much as the expensive stuff, but just think of the money you could put in your chinchilla bank in case of an emergency.

::silly::  Screws are best ... they can be moved and removed as needed.  Here's the URL to the Luv 'N Chins Chinchilla booklet ... the instructions are listed:
 http://luvnchins.com/LuvNChinsChinchillaBookletPrintable.html

For the 4 sided lookout, just don't add the top ... for a 6 sided one ... completely enclosed you add a bottom (I find them much harder to clean and much more apt to harbor bacteria ... I like the 4 & 5 sided ones the best.  A little sand paper cleans it up and when the walls are chewed just a little to much for your liking ... it's easy to replace.   :::grins::

I take the sleeves from fleece shirts pull them through the tubes and wrap them around the out side.
I do this for kits mostly, and have not have any chew on the fleece.
I wrap a 8 inch wide piece of pine and lay on the floor for moms to give birth on.And they all do lay on the fleece and have their kits.
I have made hammocks using key rings to attach but they just pee in them here. :D

::silly::   Thanks, Debbie ... glad to hear there is not as bad a chewing problem as I thought there would be.   :::grins::
I guess, due to one of my chins ... I'm always wary of the chewers ... Cotton is my 'Head-of-the-Metal-Works-Department' ... he can chew a 1/4" aluminum rod in half 2 and 1/2 times in 8 hours or less.  Most of the kits in his line are big chewers.  I believe Amanda did an article on it in one of the magazines.

I am thinking Nibbles will be a chewer of fleece. Only due to his interest in buttons and clothing fabric. If I let him...He would chew our clothes right off our backs!   ::)
