on the 9th of June me and my husband went to the pet store to shop around for my 3 yr old chinchilla GIZMO, and while buying food  treats and etc.... well my husband asked me if i wanted a male chinchilla on the hopes that they might get along and eventually their would be babies.  well we bought him and took him home and i tryed to let them adjust to each other, but they didn't.....so... i had to separate them in their cage which is a 2 story giant ferret cage with levels and ladders etc....well the male i had gotten that day was just laying everywhere didn't want to move just lay their. well the next morning i went to check on the MALE and i was half asleep in the morning i glanced in the cage to check on him and when i looked in their at him that's when i realized that there were 2 animals in their which resembled baby mice did you know that the chinchilla that i bought wasn't a MALE IT WAS A FEMALE  which had babies the next morning i was baffled i called up the pet store i bought him/her to let them know my good news, they were shocked they wanted to know if i wanted to bring them back for another...... I of course said NO.. because the people obviously didn't know what they were talking about..............so now i have 2 females and 2 babies from the male  ;D   it i admit was a great thing i bought him/her because when i called up their to the pet store the person i talked to was running around asking the owner how a male chinchilla could give birth...as they replied THEY CANT..........................................in all reality it was their loss and my gain the mother and babies couldn't be happier............I just had to tell the story because its pretty wild.........anyone ever had this happen to them?

rofl That is pretty wild. Congrats on the new addition!  ::silly::  Will you post pictures of the baby and mommy chins? I'v never seen a new born chin before. I'v never had that happen to me, but shortly after I got my 2 male chins, I had a dream that that happened. I got them at 2 different pet stores and they were pretty sure they were males. But they were both still young, about a month and a half old when I got them. I was afried that when they got older, I was going to find out that one was a female and pregnant... Which wouldn't get the worse thing. I just don't know much about breeding.

::silly:: ::silly:: ::silly::  Typical pet store!  The perfect example of how much most pet stores and pet store employees know about chinchillas.      Finally someone came out on the better side!   :2funny:  Great timing on your part.   :D

What size is the wire on the ferret cage?

How are you keeping your original female from the other female and her kits?

Are the kits males or females or one of each?  Check out this page ... about 3/4 the way down the page ... for pictures of both when they are kits.  http://www.luvnchins.com/GigetKitsDay1.html

Pictures, please!!!  Got to see those kits that were born to a 'male' chinchilla.    ???

i don't know exactly how bug the wires are but its a 2 story cage the bars are metal like a exotic bird cage its gray and silver , it has the option to separate any one from the other i have pictures ill post but when you separate them there is one ladder that goes to a level and it has a metal hook that you can just simply click into place and then i put the cooling rock over top the hole so my 3 yr old gizmo can't see them .........I'd have to say shes a bit jealous but i have a picture of the male /mother who had the kits and i have a picture of one of the kits the others a bit shy.....but back to the cage the kits can come out through the bars i have to retrieve them each morning and throughout the day when ever they get wired for sound...but here is some pictures of them ill post a picture of the light gray color one later when i take get around to it..........enjoy

to:  hoppinchins

i don't know much about breeding but i have read books about them and i did the research over the internet and Ive discussed it with a vet when i took my mother in law there because her mastiff has cherry eye and that's when she discovered the juvenile cataracts ...but i research every animal i own to the point i know more than the people at the pet store.  if you see the fish tank in the picture we have this fish its called and African lung fish if you look them up they can live in a dry mud brick for up to 7 years and they can breath oxygen in and out of water..he is neat he has 4 what look like tentacles but he can actually use then to walk per-say..i read up on hem and what some people believe he is one of the links to evolution but who really knows.......if anyone  is curious to know what I'm talking about if you don't already know look them up ..........sorry to go way off subject but some times i get carried away in the moment when its a subject about my kids or my animals......any one have any interesting stories about their experiences with chinchillas and their young.

aww, both of your guys babies are soo cute! I want one. I showed the pictures of the babies and he even said they were cute. I told him I was thinking of getting a female. Even if I do, it would be awhile... I don't have the extra money right now. :(

animalnut1310,

that is interesting. I am going to have to look up this fish. I think I want one. He sounds like a cool fish...So i'm looking it up now. That fish looks a bit weird and is bigger than I thought.  I'd like to have exotic fish. and a one tiny fish in a martini fish bowl. I def know more about my chins than the pet stores do.

a similar thing actually happened to me but i wasn't so fortunate to get a kit out of it   ::shrug:: but when my boyfriend bought me my first chinchilla the petsmart told us that it was a girl and we were planning on getting another girl when we went back to the petstore with it to double check the genitals and the "chin expert" there told us that it was a boy! thank god we found out before we got another chin because we definitely would've gotten a girl and we probably would've ended up with a baby too  ;) haha funny how that works out

Awww animalnut that is just way too wild, love their pics. Looks like good sized babies too.
You should do something about that cage though. The kits are so small and can climb any where. You would want to find them.....well ya know  ::cry222:::
The spaces are too far apart for babies, you could just attach a few strips of pine up and down the sides & the top to shorten the gaps. You can remove them easy enough after, it is a beautiful cage.
Congrats to you and to the little furballs, I so happy you got them before they were born at the pet shop.  ::nod::

We did buy a pair of male gerbils once and one gave birth to 13 babies a week later. ::)

And that's one wild fish. ;D

::silly::  That fish is something!  It is unreal that he can walk around with such skinny legs and huge body.   ::)

The kits are adorable!!!  Looks like a pink white and a beige kit.

Getting a "twofer" is good, but getting a "three-fer" is even better!   rofl

I don't blame you, I would not return them either.  They need a home where they can be taken care of properly and not a pet store where they will be constantly misshandled, housed improperly and probably even fed the wrong food.

You weren't there by chance, you were there for a reason.   ::nod::

P. S. Have you figured out if they are males or females or one of each?

well i recently went out to look for something that  would cover the outside of the cage and the only thing i could find besides galvinised aluminum which if any one didn't know will kill your pets if ingested IT IS PIOSONES, i will post more resent pictures when im done with the cage and tell me what you think?  i am putting screen around the bottom half and im going to screen in the doors so i don't have to look for them any more ..... i know i have to look for them at least 5 times a day ..its getting old.. going chinchilla hunting and all.....but when they did get out they are always in the same spots....thanks about the fish hes pretty cool..but eats a lot of food.......he comsumed 24 feeder fish last night and i just bought them, i think they eat out of bordum or something.....but if you go on to the youtube site and type in the African lung fish you will find a documantary thing that will show where their at, how they survive without water and if you happen to look they can live up to 4 years without water in the wild.......well i have to go so i can finish this giant cage so i can put everyone back  .......ill post picts soon so stay updated ........and ill take better pictures and can you tell me what their color may be im not quite sure but I WILL SEE YOU AROUND  ;)
