Chinchillas have very short memories with each other and also know each other by smell.  Two things are working against you.

1st: Your male chinchilla left for a time for the surgery.
2nd: Between the smells he picked up in the vet office and the stuff they put on him around the surgery site he smells funny.

Your female chinchilla doesn't know him anymore. Depending on how bad the fighting is you may need to place them in side by side cages and introduce them just as if they are new to each other.  Remember chinchillas do fight to the death so take her fighting very seriously.

::silly::  Do make sure he is completely healed before putting them together ... a fight could open wounds not only out side, but inside.

One thing I often do when having to reintroducing a pair is to allow them to use the same dust bath and to allow them to swap cages for an hour or so each day ... both of these methods will help to familiarize or help them remember each other.  If you notice, one of the first things chins do when they meet is to sniff each other ... that is is "proper" way to say hello between chins.  If the smells are familiar, they are more likely to be content with each other.   :)
