Moving with Chinchilla
« on: May 19, 2010, 05:42:42 AM »

Hi, my fiance and I are moving from Reston, VA (near DC) to Seattle, WA around mid-July and we need some advice on how to get our pet chinchilla across the country. First of all, we need to figure out the best pet carrier for him, which has enough space and he can't chew through it. Second, we need to know the best/safest method of chinchilla travel. My fiance is opposed to the idea of taking him in the car with us, so we're looking into pet shipping services. Is this a good idea? Has anyone used a service like this? Any horror stories, etc? Any further advice would be wonderful, as this issue has become the most stressful thing about moving.  :-\ We just want our chin to be as safe and stress-free as possible throughout this whole ordeal.

Boy...I would be so scared to ship them...good luck with this. If I were driving, I would have to bring them with me...that way I could keep an eye on them constantly. They can really be temperamental...I just (without being too cynical  :)) do not trust anyone to care for them the way I do...let us know what you decide. Wishing you lots of luck....I am nervous for you  ::scaredspeachless::

Hi, Good luck with your move. We moved from Alaska to WI  and had my 2 chins with us in the car. They were in their cages and in be tween them in a homemade cage made for the minivan was our 4 cats and 7 dogs. That move took us 10 days. The chins didn't even care, they were in their cages and at night when we would stop I made sure everyone had water and food and they had their treats like they always did. They didn't act any different, I think all the animals did so well was they were all together anyway. So traveling with them isn't to much of a problem. You might want to call around and see if anyone will ship a chinchilla. Anyway good luck again,

We moved from Denver, CO to Charlotte, NC.  We had Mom, Dad, and 3 two day old babies traveling with us.  We got a cage that almost looked like a rabbit cage, all wire.  It had no levels or anything.  We put them in the middle of the seat with a towel covering all sides but the one facing us to keep the sun off them.  We made very sure to have it nice and cool in the car!!  They did not even care as to what was going on and they all did fine.

Shipping:  Hmmm, I would not do it!  There is no guarantee of climate control.  I shipped one of my cats once and they lost her for almost 2 days!  Come to find out, she had actually been shipped to Europe and was left on the tarmack for more than 12 hours!!!  She came home dehydrated but did ok.  Chinchilla's are way to sensative to something like that happening to them.  Best wishes!!!

Thanks for the advice, guys! I think this feedback will convince my fiance to let him come in the car with us. That's what I really wanted to do all along :)

I would not ship by plane that time of year, it could get too hot for the chins.
I have shipped in a few over the years and never during the summer months.
