Hi, can anyone tell me just how risky neutering is?

I have a boy chinnie and two girls (seperate from him of course) and was thinking of getting him done so that they could all live together if they got on, or at least have playtime together.  It seems a shame that he's stuck on his own (although he can see the girls in the nearby cage) but I'd never want to take a big risk on his life.

I'd not want to put another boy with him because then they'd fight, is maybe finding a neutered female (for whatever reasons she may have been done!) the best solution?

hi there.. i was gonna do that once, and the forum i asked on , everyone told me the same thing: if its something that doesn't need to be done, its not worth the risk..

he will be fine living along.. just make sure you give him plenty of attention.. i know we all feel horrible when some of our chinnies in caged by themselves, but in reality, they do not need cagements... they do fine on their own.. really..... both my boys are separated because they fight... and i do feel bad, but i also know they are fine living alone... they get my attention so they are not lonely.

you could always get a cuddle buddy.

I have a neutered boy. It was a similar situation to yours my male and female had two baby girls. It was my opinion that the risk was worth it for him to live with his family. But that was my opinion, I'm not saying it was the right one. I did loads of research and found a specialist exotic vet about two hours away from me. I rang and spoke to them and they explained their facilities and I was happy that he would be in safe hands.

He has now been living with his mate and daughters for about six months and they're all happy together. But at the end of the day it's your decision and I wouldn't risk it if you aren't 100% happy with the person doing the operation.

i can not say from experience, but i have been told by too many people, it is very dangerous to put a chinchilla under, so not trying to be a jerk, i personally don't think a risk like that is worth it just so they could live together.. not when the chances of survival are not super high.  granted if you have a super great exoctics specialist, the risks are most likely better,  but there are alot of vets out there that do not know enough about chinchillas, and it is still very dangerous to put them under..  so why take unnessary chance for somethign that doesn't need to be done.

This 'cuddle buddy' idea.  Is it a teddy?  Happy to go get him one but can anyone please advise me on this as I don't want him eating it and getting sick!!  Like, what about the eyes on teddies!!?

hi... i'm hope i didn't come off to strong, i just wanted you to realize that  there are risks... so you could really think it over and decide.  i was hoping someone with lots and lots and lots and lots of experience woudl chime in.

anyways, a cuddle buddy is really any shape of something stuffed. i have seen squares, star shapes, some people do use teddies they buy from teh store, if you do, take all eyes, strings.etc. off.. the minute you notice something ripped, pulled, torn etc.. take it out.. the insides are very dangerous to chins if they swallow it.

also, you could make one, or maybe find one on the web... when people make them for chins, they are made with fleece cuz that is the only safe material for chins because it does not pill up, frey..etc..  if for any reason, you have something in fleece and you see a torn, whole. etc.. it still needs to be taken out immediately for his safety.

I have a male, Silly who is neutered. The anesthetic is hard on them but it went well. There is always a risk but if you have a good vet it should go well, low risk.

My vet has done quite a few chins here and hasn't lost one yet.2 of the chins I still know.
But I have heard the horror stories, and would only do it under special circumstances.
