Vegetables and treats?
« on: October 22, 2010, 03:18:35 PM »

I've been looking online for awhile and half the websites say yes half say no, so I'm wondering ... what kind of vegetables are ok as treats? I made a big salad for dinner, so can they have the ends off like the green pepper, carrots and cucumber or any lettuce? And we saved all the seeds out of the pumpkins we carved ... if I dry them out or bake them are they safe for occasional treats?
Thank you so much!

 ;)

i'm not sure about vegs, i think most of them might be unsafe because they can cause gas, but someone else will hopefully answer that.

i can tell you some other safe treats:

unfrosted cheerios, unfrosted shredded wheat, old fashioned oats [not the instant], rosehips, rose buds, chamomile, peppermint, oregano, thyme, hibiscus, red clover just to name a few.

There is a Lot of bad information online. Sadly people just repeat it. Chinchillas CANNOT have fruits or vegtables

Do not give them any vegetable, all the ones you listed, absolutely not. Pumkin seed is just like nuts, it contain oil and fat which chinchilla can't digest very well. And i think when people say vegetable treats, i think they mean the one in the bags that are sold at pet store...yea they can eat it as a treat, but it's unhealthy.
There are tons of other safe treats out there, and they are easy to get. So basically, do not give your chin anything else except treats that are on the safe list

Thanks for all the information. Glad I asked before I gave them some, because I must have found a hundred websites that said they love vegetables!  I buy them all the treats from petsmart like the apple sticks and yogurt things, crackers and raisins, I was just looking for something new and different for them! Guess I'll try the herbs that someone suggested! =]

Safe treats are 1 plai cheerio, 1 plain shredded wheat OR 1 rosehip per day. The ocasional raisin is ok when I say ocasional raisin I mean no more than once a week. They can have old fashioned oats...just a pinch---again only 1 of these per day   they can have apple twigs and pear twigs no peach or other pitted fruit wood is safe

You shouldn't buy treats at pet store, most of them are unhealthy...like the crackers and raisins. I personally like giving my chin 20 oats throughout the day than giving him one big chunk of sugary raisin, which last less than 1 minute.
