chocolate or extra dark tan??
« on: June 09, 2011, 01:14:08 PM »

What do you go by when you are trying to determine if a chinchilla is a dark or extra dark tan or chocolate?  I have heard that the hair follicle must be really dark brown right down to the skin, but I have also heard that the skin should be tan too.  What do I look for in making my determination?  The  Dam is a het. beige & the Sire an dark/extra dark white ebony.  thanks

Getting a true chocolate is very hard so most likely you have a tan.  But yes, the bar will not be visible when you blow into the fur.  The hair would be the same color all the way down to the skin in a chocolate.

Thanks for your help.  Does anyone have a picture of a dark/extra dark tan compared to a chocolate?  I probably do have a dark tan, but I'm trying to learn the comparison between the 2 colors.  I have read that a tan chin's body coloring will change to the depth of the tan color of it's tail.  True vs. False.........I wouldn't charge anymore for one, because as I tell my customers....my chins are my hobby/NOT my income.
