Common to have a hole in ear?
« on: April 09, 2012, 01:21:24 PM »

Yoday I was sniffing noses with clyde and I noticed a small puncture in his ear. It is about the size of a needle end.  I never noticed it before.  He is in his own cage so I have no idea how that could have got there. There is a little brown spot where the hole is but it isn't flaky or scaly or anyting.  It isn't even on the edge of the ear. Its as if he had his ear pierced.  Any ideas as to what caused this?

How long have you had him? Velvet (now 10 yrs. old!) has one too, but its so small its easy to miss. Years ago when i finnally noticed it and asked mom, she said at the breeder she had gotten her from, the chins each had an ear tag on for ID purposes. So maby he DID have his ear pierced. :::grins::

He and his sister were born 8 months ago.  He doesn't seem to be in distress about it though so I'll bring it up to the vet when he has his first check up

Any chance it could have been there awhile?  Baby chinchillas fight and it isn't uncommon for them to put holes in each other's ears when they are fighting over mom's milk.

It's certainly possible. Everyone has their own cages now.
