Catering to your chins.
« on: June 05, 2006, 09:51:53 AM »

I'm sure I'm not the only one here that has gone to absurd lengths to make sure their chin is comfortable so I'd like to hear some of the other bizarre things people have done to spoil there chinnies.

When I was back in my old apartment the air conditioner I had was adequate, but I was always worried about keeping the heat down on a really hot day since I was up on the 3rd floor. So I made the chin fridge. Basically it was a 1ft X 1ft heat sync that I built from a mini fridge, a water pump that's used for outdoor ponds, a bunch of copper plumping pipe and aluminum kick plates. How it worked was that there was a reservoir of water in the fridge and the water pump pumped the cold water out through the tubing into their cage where the tubing coiled around inside an aluminum box and then back out into the fridge where it was put back into the reservoir. I had to turn up the temp in the fridge and put the pump on a timer so it didn't run constantly because that box got would get down to 35 degrees sometimes. It worked great all summer and then the pump finally burned out because it was too powerful to be pushing water through that small copper pipe.

::silly:: Hi there!

Converting the spare bedroom into a chin room was the first step ...
Then, the computer room in the basement went to the chins ...
Now, the refurbishing of the whole basement is being put on hold
(now that we have two huge rooms filled with chinchillas down there)
At least, until we finish back-filling the back yard so we can put up a chin building.
The building will have central heat and air, a sink, a dishwasher, a back-up generator,
a small office for me and a huge room for the chinchillas. ::nod::

Last year, our central air went out as we were leaving for Duke...
We had to hold off leaving to go PURCHASE AND INSTALL a window unit for the chins.

We were without airconditioning for over a week, but the chins had it the whole time.  :-[

I'm guilty of letting them pick their own cages.
Some like to watch out the door of their room, while others would rather be away from the view.
I've moved them from one cage to another, only to find a pouting chin. I'll spend hours bumping them around until all are happy.
I keep their brita water chilled for them too, put a little bar fridge in down stairs. rofl
I even have a few that love a "banky" in their house, so I keep fleece laundered for them. Until it get warm and they start trowing them out. LOL
The list goes on and on..........
Good topic Null.
I can't wait to read how far others have gone to make their chins comfy.

I just built two new cages the other week, because one of my pregnant females started taking it out on AK for making her that way. I had a cage I could put him in, but AK is my boy so I just had to build him a big cage like he's used too.

Now when I say that their cages are big, I'm talking that I build them in sections and have to put them together in the chin room because they're too big to fit through the door. The smallest one I 've built is 10 sq feet and the biggest is 20 sq feet.

After we moved, we got a contractor to build each batch their very own chinproof playground.  ::wub::
