Poor Baby :(
« on: May 12, 2012, 10:34:30 AM »

Our female finally had a little one, but it was still born and was about 3 weeks too early.  It was her first and she only had one.  We think it was just too big for her first time.  It happened between 4:00am and 7:00am.  Of course I was up till 4am that morning.  It was so heart breaking, and the little one was a female with the most wonderful white mosaic coloring.  She stood there waiting for us hoping we could help, and we tried for 2 hours to warm her up but just couldn't get her to come back.

It's been a few weeks and I still cannot get that little cute face out of my head.  I’m not sure I ever will  ::cry222:::

That is very sad. I am sorry for your loss and I know you will feel better in time. Loosing animals is never an easy thing and certain pets I've had I will certainly never forget.

It is not uncommon for stillbirth to occur because of internal birth defects. Chinchillas kits come out fully formed and furred so it probably looked bigger than you might expect and at 3 weeks premature it had to be pretty small. If you are concerned about it being too big just keep in mind that you should be fine if the female is larger than the male she is bred with. Otherwise you can have problems when the baby comes to term.

I am so sorry.  :hugs: It happens sometimes especially with the first litter.

I am so very sorry for your loss.  :(

It is possible her birth canal is not big enough to pass an average sized kit. That happens sometimes, and is why breeders need to know to check and ensure a kit can pass safely if they choose to breed a chin. I am glad mom is okay though!
Sometimes these stuck little babies can end up with serious complications for the mom. If you should find yourself in this situation again, you may want to take your girl to a vet immediately, and you may be able to save both mom and the baby(ies) with a c section being performed.

:::(((  Things like this are so sad when they happen and we want/need to know why, if possible.   1. So we can avoid it again, if possible and 2. So we can accept and learn from the cause.
:)  How old is the female that delivered the still born kit?
How much did she weigh when she got pregnant?
How much did the kit weigh at birth?
What color was the momma chin?
What color was the daddy chin?
How old is the daddy chin?
How much does the daddy chin weigh?
Just a few questions whos answers may give some insite to the problem causing the still birth.   :)
