feuding roomates
« on: September 17, 2006, 09:17:41 AM »

::shrug::  I need some advice, Ping is chasing Chinpo around the cage tiny bits of fur are coming out. They have been cage mates from the beginning,I have a feeling thats it's because of the girls next to them. If  move them will they go back to the way they were or should they separated permanently? If not will Ping be able to have another cage mate?

I have the same problem with my males.
They will not get along in the same room as the females.
It can get pretty bad when she goes in heat.I have read that some will fight to the death to get at her.
Then on another list I was told that's not always the case, and males can be housed together without problems.
Now if someone would tell my chins that. ;)
I'm always going to give it a shot, and have 2 brothers now that I will try to keep together or maybe one with Dad.
I have much better luck with opposite sexed pairs than same sex.
You can move the female as far away as possible and see if that helps.
Put one of the males with the female, or split the boys up.
If one of the males are plucking fur from the other I'd split them up.
It could cause too much stress on the fellow getting picked on, or worse.
I do hope others have some tips, I could use some too ::nod::

::silly:: Hi!

Putting two males together in the same room with a female (sometimes even the same floor level) can cause a fight, even if they are brothers/cagemates/father and son.  ::tickedoff::   And even if they can not get to her, it can happen.  Even if they have been together for a long time and there has not been a problem, it can, with no other reason other than she goes into season, cause a scuffle/fight/fight to the death.  ::scaredspeachless::  This is the "survival of the fittest" rule from mother nature.  ???

BUT, on the other hand, I have seen males live in the same cage with females all around them and do nothing!  I have seen all of these things actually happen.  ::highfive::   So, it's a trial and error thing ... hoping the error part never happens.

     Since your boys

, I would separate them, they are showing aggression OR do what you did ... put the girls out of site/scent and they should do fine, but continue to keep an eye on them, especially when the girls are in season.  Things can change again.  >:(  :-\

Now there's a poll to keep track of.
I have mostly been told housing males together with females around is a no no.
It would be cool to see just what the success rate is.
We could then get tips from those who have no problems.
I would sure love to get a few of my males paired up.
I'll never stop trying ;)
Excellent advise Jo Ann, to think so much depends on the chins.

::silly::The poll is done ... Please vote!
Those that have had success, please give examples,
Those that have not ... tell the results and severity of the problem ...
We need everyone to know, it will work with some, but not all ...
If you try it, be ready to accept what happens.

In my situation, I have two brothers that are together and have been together since I got them.  My chinchillas are all in the same room.  Now I have 13 - 7 females and 6 males.   All of my males will act a little ansi and prance around the time a female in heat, but the two brothers that live together have never fought.

Out of 28 chins we only have 2 male brothers housed together and that's because they came to me as rescues that way 7 months ago.  They were older chins when I got them and had been cage mates  for awhile.  There have been no fights but one of the guys is more dominant and likes to chew the other ones whiskers off every now & then.  They are in the same cage but NOT right near any females.  These guys do get along well and snuggle etc... so I never had the heart to seperate them since everything was going smoothly.  If anything ever does go sour, they would be put in different cages.
