Treats
« on: October 21, 2012, 09:33:16 PM »

Man its been forever since I've been able to get on here! I hope everyone is doing well :)

Anyways; my boyfriend ordered a bunch of treats and sticks, and when he did he ordered a sampler of treats. She was really kind and gave us many different kinds to try and I was wondering if anyone knew how often you could feed one to chins. So far I've been doing it once a week and shredded wheat once a week (with no poop problems or anything) and I'm wondering if I could do it more often (like 2 different treats a week with or without shredded wheat) I also haven't tried everything bc I'm not 100% sure its all safe.
 Heres the treat list:
- Rosehips
- Honeysuckle
- Lily
- Appleasses- looks like horse treats (not tried)
- Globe Amaranth (not tried)
- Peony (not tried)
- Carnation (not tried)
- Wild Berry (not tried)
- Apple and Oats - looks like horse treats
- Peppermint- looks like horse treats (not tried)
- Raspberry- looks like horse treats (not tried)

Thanks :)
Anna

You can give more than twice a week but just don't over do it. Just don't exceed 1 a day but shouldn't get one every day the high sugar ones.

As for whats safe
Rosehips - Safe
Old fashioned rolled oats [not the quick-cook kind] (since these are small you can give a pinch) - Safe
Raspberry Fruit - Safe

As for the rest i don't know =)

Please do not give chinchillas berries. I know of cases where berries have caused instant fatal diarrhea in chins.
I give my chin two raisins a day without problems. I chop them up into four of 5 small pieces and distribute them throughout the day so he doesn't get them all at once. Usually he only gets one. Sometimes I'll give 3 if I notice the droppings are scant and it seems to help get things moving.

I just stick with rosehips myself. One every other day.

Grayrodent: I used to give Nickers freeze dried berries; he was fine.

Dried berries of most variaties seem to be ok, its fresh ones that seem to be the most problematic... where did he order all of that from? My chinn Velvet likes rasins, but we also give her dried apple peels (whenever mom makes a pie, I take all the peels and throw them in the food dehydrator that we have) I think she likes those more than the rasins... I also get dried yogurt dropps, one of the breeders here mentioned feeding their chinnies yogurt for their digestive health, so I tried them and she liked them almost immediatly, the breeder mentioned that not all chons do tho... i dont know from personal experiance about many of those, i've herd much of rolled oats and rosehips so they sre probably ok, but id  be slightly hesitant about the pepermint and wildberry, as well as some of the herbs...

i've never even herd of appleasses, is that a typo? or what is it, what does it look like?

It's not exactly berries just berry flavored treats. Thanks everyone :)! They've been loving the variety!
