Wht are the chances that Snickerdoodle has this condition? He has a rough patch of fur on his right hip. It looks like he chewed it. But he's a year and a half old; what are the chances that he developed this now? Is it just a passing thing? Will the patch go away? I'm getting very, very worried; I love him more than anything...

How long have you noticed this? Is the dull colored undercoat exposed? Is the length of the damaged fur different than the length of adjacent hairs? Are there a lot of loose hairs in the area? Could it be shedding and growing in a winter coat?

If it is fur chewing it can be caused by underlying health problems or environmental stress such as constant mechanical noise that might need to be ruled out. Habitual fur chewing is typically harmless and is thought to be genetic. Sometimes it comes and goes and sometimes chewers will do that all their lives.

Since two days ago. I can probably post a picture later today; I have one on my iPod. It looks like a dimple in the fur; it shows the cloudy- gray colored fur underneath.
I'm so worried about him!
