Wanting to Find a Bonded Pair of Chinchillas help!!
« on: March 20, 2014, 11:53:46 PM »

Recently i have been trying to find breeders in my area and i have no luck. Theres this exotic animal facility that carries 2 bonded males but i called and the lady said the person in charge of adoption is sick and she said she has one. So i got kind of confused because the forum on petfinder said both are to be sold together not separate. Im just hoping she did sell them already :(. I dont want to get it from a pet store because i would not know a single thing about where they came from and they may be very frightened. I Live in Los Angeles California close to the Bay area. I have the money for the cage and my dad is to support me on vetenary bills and food and bathing. But to clean there cage, maintain them at home, buying there toys, chews, etc. Is my job. So i got that part fixed i just need chinchillas! Help please

Your best bet may be googling.

Try hoobly.com .  In some areas it's not very popular but most places many if not all breeders in that area use it.  You can also search facebook.  It's common for exotics breeders and supply vendors to have a facebook page.

I found some in my area but there not bonded and I wouldn't want to put the male and female together asap. because there is a possibility of pregnancy and fighting.

I did find a few but the thing is there across California. and I don't want to buy them at petco because I don't no nothing about them. maybe I will because it sucks leaving animals like that in the store. but im still looking thanks.

P.S. there is 2 a few miles away from me but there not a bonded pair. there a male and female and I don't want to be put in the situation if they come to fight or get pregnant.

Even if you get 2 bonded chinchillas whether same gender or not you run the risk of fighting some random day in the future.  I just had to separate a long term pair because the female is being extra hormonal this pregnancy and started to beat the crap out of her very submissive mate.  Quite often my pairs and trios of young females waiting for homes or breeding age have a falling out when they hit puberty.  I don't keep too many of my young males very long so I don't know if the males are more or less likely to turn aggressive when they mature.  Getting young ones from a pet store is only going to make it a lot more likely they will some day disagree.  Really you aren't much more likely to have long term problems introducing 2 strange chins than buying a pair. You should always be prepared to house them separately temporarily or a plan for if they refuse to get along permanently.

In what I've seen on the boards I find that usually chinchillas can be coaxed to accept each other but sometimes you get a pair that absolutely incompatible. And there are times when a pair that has been bonded for years will start fighting and have to be separated for no apparent reason but that is not the norm. I do agree with kageri that if you get a pair you should be prepared to house them in separate cages because they are unpredictable.
I think it is better if you can find a bonded pair because you'll know there is hope they will get along.
Personally I like the idea of having a single chinchilla because there is no risk of fighting and it is easier to deal with health problems in the rare case they should occur. The biggest advantage of having a pair is if you have a situation where you don't have much time to socialize with your pets they can keep each other company.

I see where you are coming from. that's one thing im worried about, every other weekend im always out and don't come home until late at night meaning 11:30 or 12 im gone all day so that's why I suggest having a pair. and I don't think I can afford a second cage right now. i do have an old bird cage that i can clean up. but i suggest a pair because of that.

You can pick up a single level rabbit or guinea pig cage for backup or if you need to intro 2 chins.  Not good long term because chins like vertical space and they will chew any plastic they can reach but such cages come in handy for a few weeks.  The cheaper versions from companies like Kaytee and Living World are about $40.

The only real difference buying a pair living together versus apart is that you have to intro them which can take time.  Every now and then intros don't work out but every now and then a bonded pair doesn't work out.  If you work with a breeder or rescue that has several chinchillas they may help you start the intro process and if it doesn't work pick a different potential cagemate.  We've really only got 2 problem chins.  I have an antisocial female who grudgingly accepts my submissive male long enough to breed and that's it and I have a young male who drives all his cagemates insane by teasing them and then racing in circles around them while they lunge at him.  We're going to do a slower intro in to a bigger cage with one of my more confident females to see if she can put the little terror in his place.  Otherwise he's going to be a lone chin for life.  Then I have a few who are on the opposite end of the spectrum and you can just toss them together while they go yay a new friend and follow each other around for the rest of the day.

Yea i do see now i thought a bonded pair stay perfectly fine but i still consider getting 2 for specfic reasons. I found a rescue in my area who has 2 pairs. A pair of bots and a pair of girls so next week i am going to visit them and adopt :). Thanks to he people who helped.
