I think it's generally the number of animals you have in breeding and your set up.

Are you meaning that instead of "ranch" a large chinchilla breeder might be called something like a "farm" or "mill" or something?   :-\

Its a personal choice...sort of like what separates a horse farm from a horse ranch....

Some people call their place a chinchilla herd, some a chinchilla farm, some a chinchilla ranch.  No real difference, just whatever sounds better to the breeder.  :)

I am a new Chinchilla Breeder in South Carolina.
The name that I have picked out for my operation is Smith's Chinchilla Ranch!
Sounds good!

Welcome Jerry!   :::grins::

I am a lowcountry person also.  I got my start in chinchillas from Jamie.

My thought ....a ranch is big....like the ones out west....big wide ranges.
Home, Home on the Range!

But I do like the name of yours Jerry...very sophisticated sounding!   ::nod::

Im sure its all preference, but in my head I see a "ranch" being the ones that have been around forever, the really experienced breeders who breed for the best quality, who pelt and who sell to other breeders and or individual pet owners.
I see ranchers as the ones who take care of the fur industry by providing their perfect quality furred chins.
Others are large hobby breeders, herds, farms....whatever's clever.

I could be completely wrong, but i guess that is just the conclusion I came to with all Ive read and heard.  Its how I see it in my head, and just call it my opinion on the matter.
I call mine a herd, small hobby breeder, because its small.

But I dont know, are there very large ranches who dont pelt??  Like Jim Ritterspach's ranch, do they pelt?  or Ryersons?
I see these guys as examples of "ranches"

But now I am just talking to talk here.  If you want to fill me in on what everyone else thinks, maybe it will help me sway my thoughts with more to go on.

I agree with you, QTPie, when I think about a ranch I envision something like Whitewoods, with hundreds of animals.  But I certainly wouldn't say that is the only way to think about it.  In the end, I guess it doesn't really matter what you call your chin "operation" as long as your goal is to provide healthy, quality animals.  I guess you have to pick the name that feels most comfortable to you.

I have always wanted to live on a farm. It just never happened. I thought about naming my operation Smith's
Chinchilla Farm, but Smith's Chinchilla Ranch sounded better. More class! I have never visited Lowcountry
Chinchillas, but I am very sorry that Jamie is selling the herd. After viewing the photos on the internet, there
were really some good looking Chins! I am really looking forward to the shows, and meeting you people. And,
Yes I will be buying some breeding stock. Thanks Again!

I'm not sold out yet!  Your welcome to come visit and talk shop.  :)

Jen, not all large ranches pelt.  Circle M Chinchilla Ranch in North Carolina has well over 500 chinchillas and they sell 100 percent to the pet market.

Which reminds me Jerry, I must get you and Lee together.  He will be a great resource for you.  Also, we are hosting a chinchilla show/seminar in October in North Carolina with Ralph Shoots.  If you can make it we would love to have you and you would learn a lot!!
