I have had my 2 chins a couple of months now and they are boys who are around 4-5 months old I know it takes time to build up trust with them but I was just wondering if anyone had any good tips? I often sit by their cage and talk to them, I let them out for playtime everyday now and they jump around everywhere I think they may be starting to get used to me but i gently try to give them a scratch under the ear once they have come to my hand and they really don't like it! help please

Chinchillas can be tamed in stages. You've probably had them long enough to start working with them. Once they are not afraid of you and come up to you go in this order:
1. Under the chin.
2. Behind the ear.
3. On the back.
4. Get your pet to stand on your hands.
5. Pick him up for a few seconds.
6. Hold him for longer periods of time.

After your pet does well with one stage you can go to the next. It may take several days between stages.
Do this through the door of the cage.

Try not to reach over your chinchillas' heads, come at them from behind, or make sudden starling movements or noise.
It is a process that takes weeks but you should see positive improvement every week if you're doing it right.
If your pet jumps back just keep still and he should come back in a few moments.
There are stronger measures that can be taken but I only recommend them for pets with behavioral problems that don't respond to this method.

A method I've found that works extremely well is to place a treat on your hand(BTW do not give chins those Vitakraft drops, they're way too sugary, try dried mountain ash berries which are chock full of antioxidants). Leave your hand inside the cage, palm up, with the treat on your hand. Soon, they will find you interesting and "test the waters" by placing their paw on your hand. Leave your hand in the cage when they take the treat, and slowly they will become used to you. If you use organic oats, spread them all over, so your chins will spend more time eating the little pieces. I tried this, and after a while, my chin started hopping around the cage when my hand was in it, using my hand as a platform

1. Have a good, slow, positive introduction
2. Develop a routine, including during feeding, cleaning, dusting, and weighing
3. Have a lovely playtime routine as well
4. Stay positive and keep going!
