I'm currently awaiting the arrival of a HUGE new cage for my two boys. Along with their new home, I'd like to get a new wheel to furnish the cage. Size is not an issue, I'm mainly looking for something that is silent and will provide safe exercise for both my older chin and the newbie. I've pretty much gathered that the Leo Braun models and the Flying Saucer are about the best wheels out there. I was wondering if anyone has compared the two side by side?

They both look like durable, safe models but I'd like a little more feedback before I make the pricey purchase.

Leo Braun died, he made his wheels by hand so it will be hard to find one. i use the 15" chin spin from quality cage myself, http://www.qualitycage.com/

I've been looking at that one too. But, the new cage is made up of primarily vertical bars and only has a horizontal bar every 5 inches. With those dimensions, I'm not sure that design would mount very well.

I use the flying saucer wheels in my cages, and they are great.  We used to have wire cages and my husband anchored the base of the wheel to the floor braces.  It was absolutely silent!  Even in the solid wood cages we have now they are anchored to a wall and are pretty quiet.  And they stand up very well to the dust, etc.

   I highly recommend the Quality Cage 15" Chin Spin!!!!  We have them in about 15 of our cages now and love them.  So do the chins!

Chin spins rock! We also have a flying saucer but you need to change the bearing like every six months, and thats kinda lame.

At first I panicked, (with thoughts of chinnie kits falling out on to the floor) then I went back and checked the first post ... you have two male chinchillas (full grown, I hope).  But, even a small youth might be able to slip through the bars ... just to much space available.  If you want to test it ... take each chin's favorite treat and hold it just out of reach outside the bars ... usually, if he can get through them, he will with this test.

Then ... it has a plastic floor ... a no-no for chinchillas.

Are the different levels and ladders/ramps also plastic?   

It looks beautiful for ferrets, but I definitely would not reccomend it for a chinchilla.  Chinchillas need wire that is 1/2" x 1" or smaller, to be safe ... and ... wood or metal, not plastic, they just can not digest plastic.

If you are stuck with that cage and your two males can not get out, you will probably still have to have special brackets made to attach either the flying saucer or the chin spin wheels.  The new flying saucer wheels have been improved over the old ones.  We have 6 of them in the play areas for the chins and love them.

The Chin Spin is fantastic, and so are their chinchilla cages, imho. I was looking at the cage you purchased, and I think you would be able to mount the chin spin-just might take more work than usual. The bars are every five inches in the cage, and the chin spin is 15 inches tall, so it should line up perfectly on the vertical.  My chinchilla loves his.

Well, I just called Quality Cages yesterday and ordered the Chin Spin. I decided my older guy, Sid, is probably too stubborn to adapt to something new.

And Jo Ann, thanks for the concern and I've already made adaptations for the cage. I've replaced the plastic pans with sheet metal pans and the ramps are also going to be covered in a thin metal. Also, the bars are only 1" apart from each other and my full grown boys can't slip through at all.

The wheel should be here by next week so I'll let you know how it works out.
